Orissa Red Cross Starts Generic Medicine Stores

Fight of people for quality medicines in affordable prices is bearing fruits with Indian Red Cross Society launching Jana Ausadhi stores through its State branch in Orissa.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and fertilizers of Central Government and the Central Pharma Undertakings in the Public Sector have come forward to ensure availability of generic medicines to general public.

Stores of such medicines were opened today at the Capital Hospital and at Red Cross Bhawan, Bhubaneswar as well as at the District Headquarters hospital, Khurda. Dr. Mangala Prasad Mohanty, Honorary Secretary, IRCS-OSB states that such stores would soon be opened at every district level hospitals in collaboration with district branches of the Red Cross society.

Branded medicines are sold at higher prices than their unbranded generic equivalents of good therapeutic value, says Dr. Mohanty.
